Volunteer Roles

Our Community of Girl Scouts is entirely volunteer led. We count on volunteers to help plan and run events, support our troop leaders, mentors and girls, and promote the mission of Girl Scouts by supporting our mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Consider Volunteering!

We have openings in the roles that support our girls and volunteers. See below for details about what each role does and an estimate of the time commitment. We are always looking to support volunteers who would like to be more involved. The roles below can be shared by more than one person.

 

Training and support for each role is available through Girl Scouts River Valleys as well as current Community Leadership team members.

Community Leader

The Connection

  • Support and recruit other community team members

  • Set the calendar of events for the year

  • Facilitate community meetings

  • Facilitate communication of community and council events

  • Support and facilitate appreciation of volunteers

  • Promote and ensure community representation via delegates at the GSRV annual meeting

Maran Bush

Time commitment varies throughout the year but minimum of 3-6 hours per month gathering information, attending Community Leadership, council and troop leader meetings, and offering support to members of the Wayzata Girl Scouts community. Additional activities in the role description take additional time as needed. 

Community Product Leader

Cookies and Fall Fundraising

Fall FUNDraiser

  • Attend Fall FUNDraiser training

  • Support and organize the Fall FUNDRaiser by accepting & distributing sales materials, hosting a table at New Member Registration Night, and providing support to Troop Fall FUNDraising Managers.

  • Accept, sort and distribute fall product and rewards.

Cookies

  • Take council led training and in turn provide training for troop cookie managers.

  • Ensure Troop Product Leaders complete the responsibility form

  • Accept and distribute sale materials to troops

  • Host a community cookie rally (optional)

  • Set up a community cookie swap via email, Facebook, shared spreadsheet, etc. Update/refresh it weekly

  • Assist troops with online cookie systems questions and/or direct to systems resources.

  • Monitor during sale for troops with excessive inventory

  • Monitor end of sale to ensure troops are documenting and reconciling cookie sales in Smart Cookies

  • Sort and distribute rewards for troops

Responsibilities begin in December with taking training, planning for a cookie rally (optional) and organizing training of troop cookie managers. January usually consists of hosting trainings and an optional cookie rally. For the cookie rally, most activities and event plans already exist. February March are busy times while cooke sales are happening. This role will answer emails, set up the weekly cookie swap chain and otherwise support troop cookie managers. The last few days of the sale are usually the busiest helping troops reconcile cookie sales in ABC Smart Cookies and ensure reward choices are entered.


Additionally, this role is required to attend monthly one hour Community Leadership Team meetings.

Community Membership Leader

The Recruiter 

  • Organize recruitment events at schools and other events taking place throughout our geographical area.

  • Host a kickoff and recruitment event in the fall.

  • Help place girls in existing troops.

  • Supports the formation of new troops by discussing options with potential volunteers.

Jessi Dolinger

This role is busiest in late summer throughout fall with hosting the fall recruitment event and helping place girls into troops. Various other optional recruitment tabling events may happen throughout the year.


Additionally, this role is required to attend monthly one hour Community Leadership Team meetings.

Community Troop Support Leader

The Mentor

  • Welcome new troop leaders to Girl Scouts and serve as a point of contact for questions and assistance. 

  • Work with other community leadership to provide resources such as getting a troop bank account set up, growing their troop, and resources for planning troop activities and meetings.

Kate Jaster

Most new troop leaders join in the fall, but there may be some throughtout the year as well. The amount of time you spend with each troop leader will depend on how you choose to approach the role. At the minimum, each new troop leader should recieve a welcome message.


Additionally, this role is required to attend monthly one hour Community Leadership Team meetings.

Community Treasurer

The Money

  • Monitor the community bank account and keep documentation of income and spending. 

  • Complete the annual financial report for the Community to ensure funding from council.

  • Work with the Community Leader to create an annual budget

  • Answer questions from troops about finances.

  • Ensure troops submit their annual financial report.

Linda Dubbin

Time is required for documentation of monthly spending and income, but generally takes less than an hour per month.


Additionally, this role is required to attend monthly one hour Community Leadership Team meetings.

Community Outdoor Leader

The Happy Camper

  • Support fire safety trainings for our day camp and other volunteers

  • May plan outdoor events and activities. 

  • Promote outdoor activities and provide outdoor training in the community after receiving outdoor training through GSRV/Red Cross.  

  • This individual can also be utilized as the "trained" individual leading events/programs.  Trainings may include Sleep In/Sleep Out, Cook In/Cook Out, Archery, Small Watercraft & Low Ropes, First Aid/CPR/AED, fire safety, etc.

Tentatively filled

Fire safety trainings usually occur in June. Time commitment varies depending on optional additional activities.


Additionally, this role is required to attend monthly one hour Community Leadership Team meetings.

Community Program Leader

The Event Planner

  • Oversee an events committee and assist volunteers in planning community events. 

  • This person is a calendar ninja type of person who helps the Community Leader and team schedule the events calendar for the year. 

  • Check in with event planners on event schedules, details and locations to help promote information on this website and in email communications to all community members. 

  • Ideally, this is also someone who can be at events to assist in setup and overall management, though this may not be necessary for all events.

Vacant for 2025-2026

This role likely requires around an hour or more per month to work with event committee members to plan events. 


Additionally, this role is required to attend monthly one hour Community Leadership Team meetings.

Community Team Member

The Heart

  • A committee of volunteers that will help with the running of the community, particularly our events. 

  • Ideally, members would chair at least one event. 

  • The volunteers running events would coordinate a location, time, and details of an event, including sign ups and the event budgets.

  • Supported by the rest of the Community Leadership team, particularly the Community Program Leader 

Open to all

Volunteers will spend a minimum of one hour on their own scheduled event, possibly more depending on the size of the event. Many of our events are annual and only require someone to coordinate previously planned activities and update signups. 


Additionally, this role is required to attend monthly one hour Community Leadership Team meetings and any event planning meetings as scheduled.
